While Chester Carney was in the U.S. Navy, he traveled to Japan. After being witnessed to, he received Christ and began ministering in Okinawa. Though he was born in Canada and grew up in inner city Nashville, Chester had passion to reach the people of Japan. He married Naomi, an Okinawan woman who grew up in a Shinto home. They have been married 20 years and have 4 children. The Carneys founded the Belmont Okinawa Church which has ministries to local hospitals, the homeless, and a battered woman’s shelter. Through teaching and ministering to the younger generations, the Carneys are raising up the next generation of Japanese church leaders.
Mark & Michaela Garrison

Nashville raised and a talented mechanic and builder, Mark Garrison, met his wife, Michaela, a native German, while serving with the United States Military in Germany. The Garrisons ministered with ICM (International Christian Ministries) in Kenya for five years. Mark, Michaela, and their son Sean (now in the U.S. Air Force) work on the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho. In addition to their teaching and discipling of others in local congregations they are committed to encourage and assist Native people to know God and to make Him known to them.

A former graphic art designer and travel agent, Joseph Watson serves as a popular circuit teacher with Youth With A Mission. At discipleship schools, Joseph acts as a missions mobilizer and encourages the next generation towards great commission thinking and action.

Christ’s Gift Academy
The Cochrans helped started and help lead Christ’s Gift Academy in Mbita, Kenya. Raised in Houston, Texas, Judi Cochran is an elementary school teacher. She was very involved in Belmont’s inner city ministry and our Mexico missions before visiting her Compassion International child in Kenya. There she saw the need for a school for AIDS orphans on the shores of Lake Victoria and began to help establish Christ’s Gift Academy. Steve Cochran is a former building contractor who originally traveled to Kenya with Youth With A Mission. Together, the Cochrans and their team provide more than 300 school children with a valuable Christian education while pastoring the teachers and surrounding community including ministry to the Luo widows.
Steve and Judi have also recently been providing periodic educational and building infrastructure assistance to the war ravaged people of South Sudan.

Avishalom grew up in Ethiopia with a Ethiopian Jewish Mother and a Ethiopian father. In his twenties, he traveled to Israel in search of spiritual revelation and meaning. There he became a follower of Jesus and married an American-born, Jewish woman, Eitan and Connie Shiskoff’s daughter. Now, Avi serves as an assistant congregational leader of the Messianic congregation, Tents of Mercy. As the mixed generational leader, Avi and his wife minister to Israeli born, Ethiopian, and Russian Jews in this vibrant congregation.

Yousif and Alia Matti are Iraqi Christian with Chaldinian Catholic backgrounds. He worked for years as a geological engineer for the national oil company. With a master’s degree in physics, she used to work for Pepsi’s branch in Iraq. While they were serving as lay leaders in their church in Iraq, they felt the call to a different kind of work. They left their jobs, homes, and friends and traveled in 1992 to serve the Kurds, whose region had been devastated by Saddam Hussein’s brutal campaign of genocide against the Kurdish people. Their work in Northern Iraq has flourished. Currently, they have established three fellowships, three schools, bookstores, and radio stations in Kurdistan of Iraq. Yousif Matti is considered the founder of one of the first indigenous protestant group congregations in Kurdistan and is the director of the Classical School of the Medes, a Christian school for the people of Kurdistan.

Wycliffe Bible Translators
Working as linguists and translators in Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea, the Lovell’s have finished a translation of the New Testament that had been 25 years in the making. Connie Lovell was raised in a Wycliffe family, and Larry served in the American Military. Through Wycliffe, they seek to not only translate books into the local language of the Minaveha people on Ferguson Island but also teach them literacy skills.

Based in Manila, Philippines, Lito Llave pastors the Jesus Power Center Church. This extremely outreach-minded congregation is heavily involved in urban and inner city ministry. A former customs broker, Lito leads the church as they earnestly desire to further impact Manila and the surrounding provinces. His wife Nelia is a great support to Pastor Lito as she focuses on raising their five children.

Don Finto and his late wife Martha are a cherished part of the Belmont family. Pastor Finto graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville with a PhD in German Literature and taught at Lipscomb University for a number of years. He served Belmont as Senior Pastor for 25 years (1971-1996) and is the founder and director of Caleb Company. This prophetic fathering, teaching and mentoring ministry seeks to raise up Jewish and Gentile believers and challenge them to live holy and devoted lives. The Caleb Company focuses on advocacy for the Jewish people, prayer and worship, connecting Gentile and Messianic believers and calling the Gentile Church to be in meaningful support of what God is doing in the Jewish world in the 21st Century. Don has written a number of significant books on these topics including: "Your People Shall Be My People" and "God’s Promise and The Future of Israel."

A Kurdish woman from Iraq, Nihad was chased out of her country and lived as a refugee. After coming to the United States, Nihad found community at Belmont and now works with Servant Group International. She ministers with Muslim immigrants and refugees in Nashville and especially has a heart for Muslim women.
Martin & Karen Arroyo
Church Planting and Community Development Oaxaca, Mexico
Minister to Mixtec and Triqui Indians in an impoverished region
An Elementary Education graduate from Belmont University in Nashville, Karen worked with Belmont Church’s intercity ministry while her future husband, Martin, ministered to people on the garbage dumps of Mexico City. Martin has a degree in Educational Psychology, a background in agriculture and animal husbandry, and is a talented stained glass artisan. Today, living in Juxtlahuaca, Mexico, they have been married over twenty years and have six children. In Southern Mexico, they have established two congregations among the Mixtec and Triqui Indians and reach out to the most impoverished in their area. They also have an FM radio station which they operate from their home, broadcasting Christian content, both programs and music, eighteen hours a day.
